WYOMISSING, Pa. — Penn State Berks welcomed approximately 200 seventh-grade students and chaperones from 14 schools in and around the Berks County for its annual Careers with Math Options Conference on May 13. Now in its 26th year, the event is designed to spark interest and excitement for STEM topics early in young female students’ education.

The conference is specifically geared toward seventh-grade girls as that is an important time when students are making decisions about their academic paths in math and science. By encouraging continued study in these subjects, the event aims to broaden future opportunities and career choices.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a variety of fun, hands-on workshops held across the campus. These sessions introduced students to careers that incorporate mathematics, science and engineering, and were led by Penn State Berks faculty and students. Presenters shared their academic and career journeys, serving as inspiring role models actively involved in STEM fields.

Math teachers from various school districts accompany the attendees and they praised the event.

Amy Keller, Muhlenberg Middle School, stated in an email, “The girls had a great time and learned a lot.”

Alicia Terrizzi, Boyertown Middle School West, commented, “I honestly love this event every year, but I think yesterday was the bet one yet!”

Gina Sheehan, Twin Valley School District, added, “I think it was my fifth time attending and I am impressed each year with the students, faculty and activities."

The annual event is organized by Selvi Jagadesan, assistant teaching professor of mathematics; Jeane Serrian, lecturer in mathematics, and Cathleen Phillips, area representative in continuing education. For more information, contact Phillips at [email protected].
